Locomotives of the "Chemins de fer de l'Etat"

As usual, click on the photo for an enlarged image.

231 D series, 4 cyl. compound. Modified according  to Chapelon's theories and with its participation,  they used Lentz-Dabeg valve gear on L.P. cylinders  (i.e. where minimum steam throttling is imperative for a  good efficiency). 231 DD series (S.N.C.F. 3-231G). They are very close replicas of P.O.'s Chapelon PACIFICS, as they used identical major dimensions (the boiler is quite different however) and are fitted with Lentz-Dabeg on both H.P. & L.P. cylinders. Chapelon designed steam circuit and cams.

231 W series (S.N.C.F. 3 - 231 F). Use Willoteaux piston valves on the L.P. group.
