Engines of "La compagnie de l'Est"
- 241 001 - 0041, 4 cyl. compound 4 8
2, 1925. Heavy and lacking of power in their
beginings (1,900 H.P. for about 125 tons), their steam
circuit was improved according to Chapelon's principles
around 1932 - 34 but without asking him any advice. Power
raised to 2500 H.P., but coal consumption stayed
considerable, 3.41 pounds (1.55 kg) per H.P. per hour,
that is close to half a pound more than Chapelon's PACIFICS.
They also gave trouble with trackholding, one of them
being responsible of a great crash in the thirties after
what their bogie was redesigned, improving things a bit.
Nice engines, however! One of the type most reproduced by
French live steam modellers.
