FRENCH COMPOUND LOCOMOTIVES' HOMEPAGE

The various types of Lentz valves

Classical type

Chosen by Chapelon because of its large simplicity compared to other systems such as the Caprotti or Franklin units and their rotating cams. These can be driven directly by a standard Walschaert gear.

Concentric version

It had been designed to replace directly piston-valves in existing cylinders castings. Compact, it was the configuration choosen by Chapelon for use in the cylinders blocs (two parallel cylinders per bloc) of the 4 6 2, then 4 6 4 tank-van engine.
